In the wealthiest divorce settlement ever, Jeff Bezos moved a quarter of his Amazon stocks to his ex-wife MacKenzie Bezos on July 29. He remains the wealthiest person on Earth, while she jumps in the ranks as the world’s third-richest woman.
According to Forbes Real-Time Rankings, Bezos is worth $117.8 billion as of Thursday morning, which makes him $13 billion wealthier than the second-richest individual on the planet, Microsoft cofounder and philanthropist Bill Gates. MacKenzie, who currently holds 19.7 million shares of one of the world’s most valuable companies (in market cap), is worth $36.8 billion.
A representative for MacKenzie didn’t respond to request for comment.
The sole girls richer than Bezos are Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, heiress to her family’s beauty empire, L’Oréal. Worth $53.7 billion, and Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, who’s worth $50.4 billion.
Before the divorce proceedings, Bezos possessed 78.8 million Amazon shares, a stake worth an estimated $150 billion, using Thursday morning’s stock rates.
Although Jeff and Mackenzie filed documents with the SEC in April saying that a transfer would occur when the divorce proceedings ended, the documents confirming the move didn’t get registered until Wednesday evening. Buried in newspapers documenting Jeff’s sale of $1.8 billion dollars worth of Amazon stock (first reported by Forbes) was a footnote:”The quantity of securities beneficially owned following the reported transaction reflects a previous transfer of stocks to the reporting individual’s former spouse as separate property following court approval of a divorce decree.”
In May, MacKenzie announced that she would sign the Giving Pledge, began by billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, where signatories claim to provide at least half of their private wealth away. Jeff hasn’t signed the Giving Pledge, though he’s pledged $2 billion to assist homeless families and to construct more Montessori-inspired schools. Neither Jeff nor MacKenzie have made additional statements regarding philanthropy because their pledges.
Jeff Bezos is taking off time from Amazon to party with the world’s rich and famous. Bezos, who’s the world’s richest individual, was photographed aboard the superyacht of this billionaire entertainment mogul David Geffen this week. Geffen posted a picture to his Instagram page showing the Amazon CEO lounging on a bean bag. He had been joined by a group including his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez; former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein; and the version Karlie Kloss and her husband, Josh Kushner.
Geffen is known for cruising the high seas with star guests on his 453-foot megayacht, Rising Sun. Previously, this has included Barack and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Hanks. The pop superstar Katy Perry and the actor Orlando Bloom were on his yacht just a month ago. The yacht used to belong to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.
Bezos had been making yacht-related headlines this week after reports surfaced that he possessed a $400 million megayacht which was seen off the coast of Turkey in early July. Amazon denied these reports in a statement to Business Insider, however.
